Polyketides are a group of secondary metabolites produced by enzyme complexes known as Polyketide Synthases (PKS). They exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activities and are used in treatments of numerous diseases.

In my thesis, I will investigate the manipulation of PKS´s using minimally invasive mutagenesis in Streptomyces. We aim for the generation of libraries of derivatized natural products searching for new or better activities of those compounds compared to the starting structure.

One focal point of the manipulation will be the common reduced yield of derivatized compounds in fermentations after mutagenesis and the investigation and circumvention of its causes.
